Community Supported Agriculture
Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA, is a system of farming that brings
together farmers, community members, and agricultural land into a
mutually beneficial relationship. Members of the community purchase a
farmshare for a full growing season. This commitment implies a willingness
to share with the farmer both the bounty from the land and at least some of
the risks of its production. The farmer receives fair and guaranteed
compensation. In return, members receive a variety of fresh picked organic
vegetables, grown by farmers they personally know and trust.
Help Us Make a Difference
CSA offers a unique opportunity for local family farmers and the community
to join forces and give new life to agriculture in America.
Increasingly, food production is influenced by huge corporations interested
in profits rather than quality and environmental safety. Our farm
strives to remove itself from the inequities and ecological devastation of
the present market system. It is a social as well as economic alternative.
By joining our small family farm, you invest in the local economy and help
keep land productive and responsibly managed. It’s a win-win situation
for all!
Real Food at an Affordable Price
Benefits abound with membership at Narrow Bridge Farm, not the least of
which is better value for your money. We eliminate middlemen, packaging and
shipping expenses, and minimize marketing costs. This enables us to
price the vegetables below what it would cost to buy them elsewhere.
In addition, you are getting specially selected varieties which are rarely
found in the market. Factor in the delicious flavor and incomparable
quality of your produce and you’ve got an incredible value! Our
minimum share price for the 2002 season is $395. While we strive to
keep our share price affordable for those with a modest income, we struggle
to meet expenses and fairly compensate ourselves. If it is within your
means we encourage you to add $35 or more to this basic cost.
Additional funds will be used towards capital improvements on the
farm such as paying for our tractor and upgrading our deer fencing and
greenhouses.
OUR COMMITMENT
As a member of Narrow Bridge Farm, you will receive an assortment of organically grown vegetables each week from mid-June through early November.
Our farmshare feeds approximately one small family. Most of the
vegetables are hand-picked and washed just hours before you receive them.
We grow a wide variety of seasonal vegetables so that you will try new
delights as well as the familiar stand-bys. You are welcome to pick
your own flowers and herbs weekly, as well as cherry
tomatoes, sugar snap peas and green beans as available.
There will be
a mix-and-match system whenever possible in order to offer you maximum
choice of vegetables.
We are committed to responsible use of precious agricultural land. Our
produce is grown without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or
genetically modified organisms. We make use of locally available
manure for compost, cover crops, and crop rotation to promote healthy soil
and plants. When you support a local organic farm - ours or any of the
others in the area - you are helping to build community while sustaining the
environment.
Our Farm
We - Jon (Yoni) Thorne and Tali Adini - love to live and farm within a
community. That is why we are located in Ithaca. Our farm is
only five miles from the Commons and we encourage members to bring their
families when they pick up their weekly vegetables. Stay a while and
talk
to your friends, stroll around the field, pick some flowers! The farm
is located on Snyder Hill Road where it meets Besemer Hill Road. We
are open for picking up your vegetables on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons
from 3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.. In anticipation of the harvest, we ask
that you choose a designated pick-up day for the duration of the season.
We realize that scheduling conflicts will arise and you are welcome to
switch days occasionally. Members are welcome to stop by the farm
during weekdays to visit, lend a hand or pick some herbs.

MORE THAN JUST GREAT VEGETABLES...
Along with your share of the produce each week, you will receive a note
written by the farmers to update you about the farm. We always add
tasty recipes to help you become familiar with lesser known vegetables, plus
give storage tips and ideas for enhancing your cooking with nutritious
grains and fresh herbs.
We hope belonging to our farm will enrich not
only your table, but also your sense of community.
We will host
monthly potluck dinners and community celebrations to help us to get to know
one another and deepen our relationship to the land.
Getting Involved
Involvement in the farm (beyond the cost of a share) is vital to making our
community farm sustainable and is also lots of fun! Over the course of
the season each household is expected to commit a minimum of 8 hours of
labor for the farm. If two households purchase a share together, each
household must work 8 hours during the season. Alternatively, one
household works 8 hours and the second pays $40 to cover the administrative
burden of splitting the share (see sign up form). Jobs range from
planting, harvesting and weeding to greenhouse chores and
helping with social events. We are in need of help May through
November.
